The Plants Garden

The Plants Garden, located on the boulevard of the same name, is not only a place steeped in history...

but Amiens also has the privilege of having one of the oldest botanical gardens in France... It was in 1751 that the Jardin du Roy, on the site of an old 13th century garden, was ceded by Louis XV to create a Jardin des Plantes.

For 140 years, the garden has had a national reputation for its botany courses in the reception pavilion, its collections and its exchanges. People such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the Empress Josephine and the storyteller Charles Nodier frequented it.

In 1895, when the classes were moved to the Medical School, the garden became the production site for the city's plantations, which allowed the number of squares and flowerbeds to keep growing. The number of greenhouses increased, notably with the construction of the Napoleon III greenhouse...

From 2003 to 2005, the project to refurbish the botanical part of the museum was launched on the theme of "plants, uses and people". Approximately 1,800 species, divided into collections, are presented on almost one hectare. As a botanical garden, the Jardin des Plantes labels and indexes its plants. Seeds collected and cultivation experiments are exchanged with other gardens around the world...
