Local history: Hideout & Marionettes

In the 3rd century, man made “muches”, hiding places to provide protection from Barbarian invasion.
“Chés cabotans”: string puppets with legs. They are found in Amiens from the 17th century.

Morning

“Chés Cabotans d’Amiens” puppet show. This theatre company perpetuates the great Amiens tradition of rod puppets and marionettes. The three heroes, Lafleur, Sandrine and Tchot Blaise are natives of Saint-Leu, Amiens’ old working-class district.
Duration: 1¼ hours

Midday

Free time: picnic in the gardens of the Bishop’s Palace (behind the Cathedral) or in Saint-Pierre Park (between the Hortillonnages and the Saint-Leu district).

Afternoon

Audioguided visit to the underground city of Naours. Starting work in the 3rd century, locals dug beneath the limestone plateau to create a refuge during times of invasion – hideouts called “muches” in Picardy dialect. There are 26 galleries, 300 rooms, public squares, wells and a chapel to explore – and you can also take a stroll through the park, discover pivoted windmills, and make good use of the playgrounds.
