Jules Verne’s “Ideal City”

Jules Verne was a citizen and councillor of Amiens, and he loved walking around his city.
During this walk, appreciate the nuances of the actual town today and the one imagined by Jules Verne in 1873.

In 1857, Jules Verne married a girl from Amiens, Honorine Deviane. They set up home in Paris, then in Crotoy in the Baie de Somme. In 1871, the family settled down in Amiens, where Jules Verne spent the last 34 years of his life and where he wrote his series of extraordinary voyages.

In 1872, the writer became actively involved in local life. He was councillor from 1888 to 1904. He took a very close interest in the city’s cultural affairs and wrote many reports on the theatre and lent his support to the construction of a circus.

Jules Verne died in Amiens on 24th March 1905 and is buried in the Madeleine cemetery.
