European Heritage Days in Amiens

For this 34th edition of the European Heritage Days, being held on 16th and 17th September 2017, the Ministry of Culture has chosen Youth as the theme. This is a unique opportunity to discover and explore locations throughout the city that have been opened exclusively for the occasion.

The Heritage Service, in charge of this event in Amiens has presented this theme by inviting students from the Acheulean Professional Lycee to show their skills through demonstrations in front of various Amiens monuments. There are numerous heritage skills on show including restoration, renovation, conservation and construction (On Saturday from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. a carpentry workshop at the Eglise Saint-leu; a metal workshop at Place Longueville, a stonemasonry workshop at Place Notre Dame, masonry workshop at Place Gambetta).

For the first time, thanks to the European Heritage Days, the Centre Hospitalier Philippe Pinel (psychiatric hospital) opens its doors to the public. This is an opportunity to discover the remarkable achievements of architect, Emile Riquier, who made a significant mark on the city in the nineteenth century. Set on 34 hectares of land, the property offers a particularly well-conserved collection of buildings necessary for the daily life and care of patients. (Visit-Conference on Saturday and Sunday at 10.00 a.m., 2.00 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. on reservation).

The day before the Amiens SC-OM match, the Stade de la Licorne will be taking part in the event. Contemporary architecture belongs to heritage and should be carefully conserved and viewed to be appreciated.

Finally, the European Heritage Days end on Sunday at 9.30 p.m. will come to a close with the last Chroma session at Amiens Cathedral and around 300,000 spectators following a concert on the square at 8.30 p.m.

At the gates of Amiens, the neighbouring towns also offer a chance to discover their rich history from châteaux to churches, historical walks to guided tours, extraordinary visits and activities for all the family. Amiens' little gems are unveiled for all to enjoy at this great event. Don't miss it!

Finally, these 10 days of Heritage will also showcase some digital innovations that offer new knowledge to the city of Amiens and its surrounding area.
