Amiens: 2020 European capital of youth

In Portugal, at Cascais, on Thursday, 23rd November 2017, Amiens was chosen to be the European capital of youth for 2020, becoming the first French town to win this title.

In the presence of the Mayor of Amiens, Brigitte Fouré, and the deputy mayor in charge of youth, Margaux Delétré, the 10 person delegation from Amiens, which included young people and city employees, welcomed the announcement with thunderous applause.

"We are the European Capital of Youth, the capital of talent and enthusiasm. We owe this victory to the unparalleled collective resolve of our councillors, service providers, associations, friends and local personalities. We have raised up our most precious resource, that of our your people. Together we can all assert that we are proud to be Picards from Amiens", declared Brigitte Fouré when the result was announced.

Amiens, represented by a young person and a technician, made the case for its candidature in Brussels, before a jury made up of European MPs and members of the European Commission, just like all the other towns selected: Chisinau (Moldavia), Klaipeda (Lithuania), Timisoara (Romania) and Villach (Austria).
Amiens will follow Novi Sad in Serbia, elected for 2019. The town is already preparing itself to spend a year welcoming young people from all over Europe. In 2020 there will be a series of concerts, shows, festivals, sporting events and exhibitions that will make Amiens the European hub for young people.
